Strange Readings From The Weather Station (New Album out 1st June 2015)

'Strange Readings From The Weather Station’ is the long awaited new album from Welsh born folk singer/songwriter James McArthur and his band The Head Gardeners.

Following the release of the EP ‘Lawn Order’, Strange Readings From The Weather Station, delivers a startlingly accomplished brace of songs in a unique style of hazy folk; with plucked guitar lines & breathy, playful vocals that are reinforced with yearning violin parts and haunting pedal steel guitar.  The tracks invite you on a journey, through rolling harmonies, shifting guitar, with  songs as changeable as the British weather.

The album was recorded at Tin Room Studios in Hackney, London and Wickham Farm, Welling (once the home and studio of singer Kate Bush) with Head Gardeners Johnny O and Jim Willis, and featuring guest musicians Samantha Whates and Syd Arthurs’ Joel Magill and Raven Bush.

Lawn Order  (EP)

This 4 track EP was released in 2013 on Melodica Recordings,  The song 'Lawn Order' is a spritely spring-time jaunt with a crisp drum track,  'Once Upon A Thought' is more contemplative, with a touch of melancholy.

To complete the package are a pair of edits from Tythe and DJ Chris Coco. Tythe's take on McArthur's 'Roll Another' introduces Balearic atmospheres and sunny slide-guitar licks for the perfect accompaniment to a lazy pina colada by a palm tree. Chris Coco creates a 'Vocal Dub' of Citizen Cained', again from McArthur's previous single on the label. It's a bumpy, happy-go-lucky edit with subtle dub FX and hazy undertones.

'Very pretty!' - Lauren Brennan, Music Scheduler, BBC 6 Music.
Totally in touch with his inner Simon & Garfunkel...there's a nice sense of innocence and dustiness to this that pulls at your heart' - The POP! Stereo Blog

Citizen Cained  (Single)

The tongue-in-cheek title track 'Citizen Cained' is a dreamy polyrhythmic adventure narrating the protagonists' quest to make sense of his earthy surroundings.

The B-Side 'Roll Another' is an ode to the fencing off of the natural world, told through McArthur’s mellifluous tongue and the hazy rolling harmonies of his plucked guitar.

Released by Melodica Recordings in 2012.

'Shimmering in all the right places' Adam Walton, BBC Wales.
'A good intro to James, particularly for its pace and hooky guitar'  Jeff Smith, Head of Music, BBC 6 Music

Plan Your Own Escape (Album)

Plan Your Own Escape was the debut album from James released by Orectic Records in 2006, it was recorded with guest artists -  Kenwyn House (Reef),  Terry McGaughey (Millimetre) and Jess Noble.  The songs represented a new and unique voice with a rich history of influences and inspirations; Coming from a symbiosis of 60’s folk-rock (Neil Young to Fairport Convention) and late 80’s/early 90’s neo-rock (Beck and fellow Welshmen Super Furry Animals), his work is neither a replica nor tribute and rivals anything from that original period.

Performed, written and  recorded at home by James McArthur, the album contains 10 tracks

‘James McArthur's release is a touching acoustic record featuring some very pleasant guitar parts and songs that grow and grow. The album contains some great pop moments too whimsically blending folk, pop and singer songwriter morbidity. Very nice stuff.’  Rough Trade
